The publication combines the skills of a photographer William Stanley Montague Cann, and the holiday journal of his sister, Annie Mary Cann, in which she records a time in the summer of 1897 when they visited their family home in Devon and used the visit to explore the locations referenced within Charles Kingsley’s popular novel of 1855, ‘Westward Ho!’
On their return to Liverpool, Annie gave lectures entitled “The Homes of the Heroes of Westward Ho!” illustrated by over one hundred lime-light views.
It is from the lantern slides and an associated album of prints used for Annie’s lecture and her journal that their holiday can be explored and allow the reader to glimpse the late Victorian period just as advances in travel and changes in employment were becoming familiar. Interlaced in the dialogue are discussion of the story as portrayed by Kingsley and further information on the places and people mentioned.
The photos are never before seen views of the locality including such as: Morwenstow, Stowe, Welcombe, Hartland, Clovelly, Bideford, Appledore, Westward Ho!, Ilfracombe, Lynmouth, and Torrington alongside Exeter; Torquay and Plymouth, all taken from the original glass slides.
The 240 page book contains around 240 pictures and costs £20 inc UK delivery via MyHermes.
