The HPA committee would like to thank everyone involved with our association for their continued support and we would like to wish you all a very Happy New Year.

We start 2010 with some very good news as we have just been awarded a second grant, this time from Leader 4.

The two-year project is about Sustainable Tourism. Sustainable Tourism can be defined as:
‘Any form of tourism development, management or activity which ensures the long term protection and preservation of natural, cultural and social resources and contributes in a positive way to the economic development and well being of individuals living, working or staying in that destination”

We hope that we will be able to achieve a workable balance between the needs of the visitors, our community and its businesses and our surrounding unique environment, and our project will be linked to environmental bodies such as the AONB, Natural England, The National Trust, and Devon Wildlife Trust. It will also support both local and regional projects, such as the AONB’s  ‘ Explore the North Devon Coast ‘.

Over the next two years we would like the area to be recognised as a quality destination, promoting its remoteness, wildness and beauty by way of its historic, built and natural landscapes and seascapes.

Some of the initiatives we will be involved with are:

1. Redesigning the website with new and innovative technologies such as interactive maps, audio/video clips, wildlife data collection and customer surveys.

2. Designing a heritage trail around Hartland.

3. Including two new seasonal walks using downloadable audio and video material.

4. Promoting local produce and local businesses.

As you can imagine, the committee are absolutely delighted to be working on such an exciting venture, but we very much want this to be a community project. We would welcome your help and assistance, so if you believe you have something, no matter how small to add, or you have any other ideas please do contact me. We are only just starting out, so your support could be really useful to us. I look forward to hearing from you. Jane Young 441538
