Clive says: “The first book was always part of a trilogy. The first edition sold out before I received the next copies from the printer. I think the success has been down to the mixture of a fast moving story, humour, a moral and some magic all set in places people recognise. They are popular with anyone from 9 to 99 years old. I have had some really great emails and comments from readers.”
The books are inspired by a myth that a white hare warns fishermen in the South West of storms at sea.
The follow up stories are called “Assander and Herne” and “Assander and the Selkie”.
Clive explains: “The first book was set in the 1860’s. The next books feature characters from the first as they move through history. The second is set in 1933; Herne is a figure from English legend who was a hunter and in this story Assander learns of the great hunts of the past, helps to stop a shipwreck and together with Herne comes to the aid of a young family in distress. The third book is set in the present. It features the selkie a creature from Norse legend. It’s got international smugglers and Assander and a whole army of white hares discovering a plan that endangers the whole coastline”
When the first book was released Clive made a 5 feet high model of the White Hare logo in papier-mache made from the first printed draft of the book; he thought it was a great way of recycling. This has hung in his gallery window since the release, much to the delight of passers-by.
To celebrate the publication of the new books the model of Assander has been dressed in his own Santa outfit.
The three books are available at £14.99 from Clive’s White Hare studio-gallery at 67 The Square Hartland, and online at www.whitehare.co.uk
