Just on the doorstep is the fabulous tourist attraction of Clovelly, which most visitors to the area seem to have on their must-see list. So, it’s no surprise that the village was recently voted as “Best Heritage Attraction” by the viewers and readers of “Countryfile”.

The Hon. John Rous, owner of the Clovelly estate, has exclaimed how delighted he and the other villagers were with this accolade, saying: “It is a great honour and I believe reflects not just the unique beauty of the place, but also that Clovelly is a “living village” with full-time occupancy a condition of tenancy. As a privately owned village, we hope to take a long term view of any development and combine respect for our fishing tradition with an ability to adapt to changing circumstances. For instance we have a festival at the beginning of September to celebrate our good fortune in having some of the country’s finest lobsters and crabs, which we catch in the bay just outside the harbour and in November we celebrate our gratitude for the annual arrival of the large shoals of herring with our Herring Festival. These “silver darlings” were once our major source of income. We are glad to know that Clovelly is held so fondly by so many people, not just in this country, but throughout the world.”

Additionally, H V Morton wrote this book, “In Search of England”, published in 1926, which was a best seller. In it, Clovelly was described as “just too quaint” and little has changed in almost 100 years since. The broadcaster, John McCarthy, has been following H V Morton’s travels and recorded a programme at Clovelly, which includes interviews with celebrity actor, Joss Ackland CBE, The Hon. John Rous, Stephen Perham, Harbour Master and Niall Taylor, member of the HV Morton Society and author of website http://www.hvmorton.co.uk/
