The beautiful Speke’s Mill beach, on the Hartland Peninsula in North Devon, has been voted the No. 1 ‘Secluded Beach’ by The Times this week.
As part of a series of linked articles The Times is revealing its Top 20 off the beaten track locations, and Speke’s Mill has topped the charts for best secluded beach.
The Times article says, "The North Devon Hartland coast is one of England’s wildest and this large rocky beach is its most beautiful.
"A streamside walk through meadows leads to a 60ft waterfall plunging into a deep canyon. Dramatic folded cliffs tower and fingers of rock and sand reach to the sea. At low tide the long, sandy pools are perfect for paddling in."
It also names nearby Docton Mill Gardens and Tea Room, "delightful water garden just a 20-minute walk from the beach", as the perfect place to eat, and Blackpool Mill Cottage, part of the Hartland Abbey estate and location for Barton Cottage in BBC’s Sense and Sensibility, as the ideal place to stay: a "remote 15th-century cottage with its own beach and stream".
